The Church Song

by Craig M. Johnson

/

about

During an imminent tragedy, the church member is confronted by the fact that the leading deacon will call a meeting a week from Tuesday to deal with the current present fact that the church is on fire.

A series of greater tragedies ensue as the church policy to conduct a meeting to decide what to do trumps the threat of fire, tornadoes and even the Lord's return!

while I never heard this original version by Mack Evans, I received the original lyrics. Giving credit where credit is due, attribution goes to Mr. Evans for this great original lyric.

Church Policy
By (Mack Evans- Just For Fun Album1978)

Well I noticed something strange when I went to church last Sunday.
Billows of smoke came pouring through the door.
I ran up to tell the leading deacon
Something must be done, the church is on fire for sure.

But he said, "Now, that's a point well put, and a timely suggestion.
We will bring up at the very next meeting of the board of deacons
A week from Tuesday. I don't know why, it's just church policy...
At the First Nazer-Methodist Bapti-Costal, Seventh Day Organized,
Lutherterian, Non-Denominational Church of her lady of the mind.

Well we met again on the very next Sunday
In a tent bought and paid for by the building fund
I stood up to tell the congregation
There's a tornado coming, everybody run!

They all said, "Now, that's a point well put, and a timely suggestion.

Well, we had an open air meeting the very next Sunday.
When the trumpet blew, and all the clouds were rolled away.
I stood up to tell the congregation,
Look up dear friend, why the Lord has come today!

But I looked around and they were all still there and all said in unison
"Now, that's a point well put, and a timely suggestion.
We will bring up at the very next meeting of the board of deacons
A week from Tuesday. I don't know why, it's just church policy...
At the First Nazer-Methodist Bapti-Costal, Seventh Day Organized,

The church song version (how I learned it)

I noticed something different in the church one Sunday.
There was a cloud of smoke coming from the church floor.
I rushed up and told the leading deacon
Let's get everybody out! The church is on fire for sure.

He said, "Well, that's a point well put. It's a timely suggestion.
We're sure to bring it up in the very next meeting of a board of deacons
A week from Tuesday. I don't know why, but it's our church policy...
Here at the first Naza-Metho-Bapti-Costal, Seventh Day Orthodox,
Lutheryterian, Non-Denominational Church of the Lady of the Mind.

When I went back to church on the very next Sunday
They had a tent set up by the burned out building front.
I stood up to warn the congregation
There's a tornado coming, everybody run!

The choir sang, "Well, that's a point well put.

Well, we had an open air meeting on the very next Sunday.
When the trumpet blew, and the clouds were rolled away.
And I stood up and yelled to the congregation,
Lift your heads up high, the Lord might be coming today!

They all sang, "Well, that's a point well put. It's a timely suggestion.
We're sure to bring it up in the very next meeting of a board of deacons
A week from Tuesday. I don't know why, but it's our church policy...
